The Raven

The Raven by Edger Alan Poe. I really like that this poem has some rythm to it. ABCBBB It makes the poem more interesting. This poem seems as if someone is morning over the lose of a loved one. Poe uses many metaphors and the poem seems very sad and depressing. Im not a big fan of this poem becuase its so sad and depressing.

Death be Not Proud

John Donnes Death be Not Proud is a really good poem. I had a hard time reading this at first becuase of the older type language. But I found that the poem is about being proud of dieing. He makes death seem like its going to be pleasent like "sleep".

The Sick Rose

When I first read this poem I thought that it was about someone being murdered or revenge aganst someone. But after I read more into it I figured out that the rose is a women maybe and the invisible worm is a man and that there is a secret love between the rose and the worm which ends up destroying the rose.

To His Coy Mistress

I think that this poem is very good. I think that this poem is about a man wanting a women he liked to become his mistress. That he would pay her to be his mistrees "two hundred to adore each breast". That his love would grow even more for her. I really like how the he has written the poem there is some rhyme.

My Papa's Waltz by:Theodore Roethke

This poem was very interesting because it can be interpreted in different ways. I first interepreted as the father abusing the child. I thought this because the father is drunk and their hitting the pans and the boys ear scraped against his fathers buckle. But when I look more indepth I figured that maybe they are just dancing and haveing fun. Horseplay, the father drinking but not drunk. The little boy having so much fun he does not want to fall off. Mother mad but not so mad that she cant get a frown on her face Roethke’s dad’s hands would have been bruised and battered because he worked in a green house so he did hard labor. It is time to go to bed but doesn’t want to.

A StreetCar Named Desire

Tennesse Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire was very interesting, good and captivating. We see from the moment that Blanche shows up that their is going to be a conflict between the characters. She is very outspoken and self-centered. She is a character that I dont really like. I also think that she was lieing about how she lost the plantation I dont think that because of the deaths of her family that the funneral place would take it. Each of the characters where very different from Blanche the outspoken selfish one to Stella the one who cares for everyones feelings expecially her sisters to Stanley the man the one who works hard and expects there to be food on the table and haven a good wife. This play kept me on the edge becuase you think that something may happen between Blanche and Stanley. I really liked this play and hope to see the movie for it so I can get a litle better understanding for the characters.

Recitatif/Arabi

Recitatif was a really good story. The characters are very different from eachother and change throughout the story. The main character in the story are Twyala and Roberta. They become best friends in the the shelter that they were takin to. They became such good friends becuase unlike the other childern their prents are still alive they just cant take car of them. Throughout the story after the girls leave the shelter they dont speak eachother other than the ocasional run in. They run it to eachother a few times and each time the girls are very different. First Roberta is very mean to Twalya. Then their nice to eachother it keeps changing. Roberta's and Twalya's mothers are very different also. Twalya's mother when she came to visit didnt bring lunch for twalya she dressed like she wasnt going to chruch and didnt act right in a church setting. Roberta's mother brought a huge lunch dressed like she was going to chruch she didnt like Twalya's mother.
Arabi
The main character in this story is a little boy who has a major crush on his freinds sister. He makes promises that he didnt keep to her.

Trifles

I liked this play. It kept me wandering if they were ever going to find out who killed Mr. Wright. You start to think that Mrs. Wright did it becuase she is just sitting in the chair pleading at her apron and found that she didnt call any one when she woke to find her husband dead. But then you start to feel bad for her like maybe she didnt do anything becuase she was in shock. Then further into the play the ladies find a dead canarie that had been strangled. This makes you think that no doubt that Mrs. Wright had killed her husband. Within the story Glaspell goes from talking about what the ladies are doing then to what the men are doing. So it gives you more information about the whole situation. If she was to just talk about the men then we wouldnt know about the canarie becasue the ladies didnt say anything to the men about it. If she didnt talk about the men then they wouldnt know about Mrs. Wright in her chair or that she didnt call anyone when she found the husband dead or that the rope came from the house and not an outside source.

In The Lake by the Woods

I didnt acutally get to read the book but I did read a summary. I thought that it sounded like a really good book. What I had read was that this man was in to politics and he was in the war. Him and his wife went to a town called The Lake by the Woods and then she disaperred and the husband was getting blamed for it. I wish I could have read it becuase it seemed like a really good book.

The Hunger Artist/ Young Goodman Brown

The Hunger Artist
I thought that this was a good story. Its about a man that lies in a cage where he does not eat. In the begining he had many spectators. Many of which did not believe he was really not eating. But many people were still fasinated. After a while he joined the circus and not as many people really found interest in the hunger artist. No one kept track of how long he had not eaten for and neither did he. One day a spectator noticed that there was no hungar artist in the cage. He was hidden under the straw and had died. He was then barried and replaced with a panther. I thought that the symbolism in this story was that the crowd thought that this man the hunger artist was doing this to prove a point that there was great meaning behind what he was doing but really there wasn't any meaning at all for why he was starving himself. He just couldn't find anything that he liked to eat.

Young Goodman Brown
This story starts out when Young Goodman Brown leaves his wife Faith to do an overnight errand but Faith does not want him to go. But he does and along the way he runs in to an old man that he felt he was supposed to meet up with. This man to me I think is supposed to be a symbol of the dark side. Which he would be going in to. He loses all good.

The Jewelry / The Cask of Amontillado

The Jewelry
I really liked this story. This story was very ironic. It starts out with the wife wearing lots of beautiful jewelry that she says is false. "Bust she got into the habit of suspending in her pretty ears two big cut pebbles, fashioned in imiation of diamonds and she wore necklaces of false pearls, bracelets of fasle gold and haircombs studded with paste-imitations precious stones." Her husband told her she shouldnt be flashing around jewelry the way she did, when it was fake. He said when one can't afford such jewelry then she should grace people with her natruel beauty. But she didn't care she loved to wear her jewelry. She ended up dieing of pneumonia. After a while the husband ran out of money so he took one of the false neckleses hopeing to get six francs but found that it was worth much much more. So he took all his wifes jewelry and found that he could get 196,00 francs. His died wifes jewelry was a life savor.

The cask of Amontillado
This story was extremly confusing. All I could understand is that there was a guy that ended up blocking himslef in a casket where he would die.

A Rose for Emily

The setting for this story is Emily's house. Everyone is at her funeral. I thought this story was quit good.

The Lady with the Dog

I think that there are more than one setting in this story. The main setting is Yalta which is a Russian city on the Black sea. This is where im guessing the main charaters meet. I didnt really like this story. I did not like the man the one who portrade women in a bad way.

I think that the plot of this story was the wisdom being handed down from the mother to, Im guessing her daughter. An older figure maybe important to the other person/daughter so this information is very important.
AN occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
I think that the plot in this story is the fighting between the north and the south. The farm worker fighting for the south he knows if he goes to fight agasnt the north that he would be hung. But he does and as he is waiting with the nose around his neck another plot apears. Things go throw his mind like he could get out of the ropes and as the man gets of the board holding him up he falls and as he falls the rope breaks and he goes in to the water. He trys to get away but the soldiers shot at him and then he gets out of the water safe and then heads for home. As he gets to the gate he feels a sharp pain. He was dead. So as he was hanging he thought all this in his head.

I thought this was a little confusing at first becuase i thought it was just a whole bunch of info that she was just spuing out. But then I figured she must be giving wisdom to some one maybe her daughter.
Owl Creek Bridge
I thought this was very interesting I thought that he was going to be able to be back with his family. That the rope really did break and he didnt get hit by any of the bullets that were shot at him. But then it was such a disappointment at the end when you find out that he dies that everything that happend really didnt.

Hills Like White Elephants

I have no clue what to weite about this. To me it was really confusing, I did not understand what was going on in this story.
After talking about this story in this class I found that the reason why I was so confused is because the couple are fighting about something. The story uses different things so show what they are talking about. The hills like what elephants is like pregnancy/abortion.

A Good Man is Hard to Find

I thought that this was a good story it kept me wandering what was going to happen next. Its about a grandmother, her son and his family going on a family trip to Florida. But the grandmother dosnt want to go becuase she wants to go to Tennesse. She trys talking her son out of it by saying the kids have never been to Tennesse and that there was a killer loose by the name of Misfit and he was headed to Florida. Well the grandmother did not get to go to Tennesse. She was the first in the car the next morning with her cat hidden in a basket. As the trip goes on the grandmother tells stories of Tennesse and Georgia as the little boy crtisizes them for being so boring. When they enter Florida the grandmother tells the childeren of a house that had 6 white colums and there was a secret panel with silver in it. After the story the childeren tried talking their father in to going and after a few minutes of wineing the childeren go their way. The grandmother pointed out that the dirt road was a mile or so back and they headed on to the dirt road. As they driving a while on the dirt road the grandmother relized she made a terrible mistake the house wasnt in Florida but in Tennesse. She got so upset her feet julted up and distered her basket and then the cat freaked out and sprang on the Bailey's (the dad) shoulder. It scared him so much that he flipped the car in to the ditch and rolled the car. Everyone was ok just minor cuts scraps and the mother had a broken shoulder. They didnt think anyone was going to find them but then a car came up of the hill. Three men got out of the car and said that they could help them. In the grandmothers mind she knew who one man was but couldnt pin point it. Finally she blurted out your the misfit and inded he was. The two men with the Misfit killed everyone but the grandmother. As they were being killed the grandmother kept saying the the misfit was a good man. After a while he killed her to.

In reading "The Story of an Hour" By Kate Chopin I thought this story was interesting and thought provoking because it gets you first, with Mrs. Mallard having a heart condition so you think she is going to die. But then she goes on to tell you that Mr. Mallard dies. So my assumtion was all wrong. But yet the story takes another turn and Mr. Mallared isnt really dead. But then Mrs. Mallard does die from her heart condition. So though I thought my assumption to be wrong I was really right, but the story took me for a turn.I also think that Chopin used alot of great describing words to show how the emotion of her husbands death comes over her. From the way she stands in the window to the way she was in her sisters arms.The the way she cried from finding out that her husband was died and then again when she found he was alive.

After reading "The Story of an Hour" a second time my thoughts did not change I still feel the same about it. I am a little confused on why they would tell Mrs. Mallard that her husband was dead if they didnt have evidence but that was it.
